The Democracy & Belonging Forum, an initiative anchored by the Othering & Belonging Institute at the University of California, Berkeley, is committed to safeguarding the privacy of your personal data. This page provides information on our digital presence and how it abides by the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
In presenting our privacy policy, we want to be as clear and transparent as possible. It should not be a chore to understand how your data is used and what your rights are. To help you do so, the following sections detail the different ways in which we collect, use and handle your data. Each section also points to the respective privacy policies of services we use.
Your data is being safeguarded in accordance with UC Berkeley’s security policies. UC Berkeley complies with the requirements of GDPR, the UK GDPR, and other European privacy laws. For purposes of the GDPR, the data controller is the Regents of the University of California, with a location at 1111 Franklin Street, Oakland, California 94607 and a location at the University of California, Berkeley, Othering & Belonging Institute, 460 Stephens Hall Berkeley, California 94720.
At any time, you have the right to ask us what data we have collected on you as well as to request that we update or delete this data. You also have the following rights, but please note that they only apply in certain circumstances:
Access your Personal Data, as well as information relating to the recipients of your Personal Data, the purposes of processing your Personal Data, the duration for which the Personal Data will be stored, and the source of Personal Data that has not been provided by you;
Rectify or correct inaccurate or incomplete Personal Data concerning you, taking into account the purposes of the processing, and the right to have incomplete Personal Data completed;
Move your Personal Data to another controller or processor. UC Berkeley (UCB) will facilitate the lawful transfer of your data to the extent possible;
Have your Personal Data erased in certain circumstances;
Restrict the processing of your Personal Data in certain circumstances;
Object to the processing of Personal Data in certain circumstances;
Withdraw your consent to the processing of your Personal Data, should UCB ask for your consent for the processing of your Personal Data. The withdrawal does not affect the lawfulness of processing based on your consent before its withdrawal.
Know whether your Personal Data is being used for automated decision-making, including profiling. In those cases, UCB will give you meaningful information about the logic involved, the significance and the envisaged consequences of such processing for your data, and the right to request human intervention; and
Lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority. If you have a complaint, please contact your local Data Protection Supervisory Authority.
We keep your data only for as long as is necessary for our purposes. In considering how long to keep it, we will take into account its relevance to our initiative and our legal obligations. Squarespace
The Democracy & Belonging Forum website is hosted by Squarespace. Squarespace collects personal data when you visit this website, including 1) information about your browser, network and device, 2) web pages you visited prior to coming to this website, 3) your IP address. Squarespace needs the data to run this website, and to protect and improve its platform and services. Squarespace analyzes the data in a de-personalized form.
The website uses cookies and similar technologies, which are small files or pieces of text that download to a device when a visitor accesses a website or app. These functional and required cookies are always used, which allow Squarespace, our hosting platform, to securely serve this website to you. E-Newsletter
If you sign up for our newsletter and thus provide your explicit consent to receive information from the Democracy & Belonging Forum. The Democracy & Belonging Forum newsletter highlights ongoing and upcoming activities, announcements, and more. To receive our newsletter, we need at least your e-mail address. (We also ask for your first and last name, but these are not required fields.) We use an opt-in process to manage our newsletter subscriptions, which means that we only send you our newsletter if you explicitly allow us to. We save this data and use it only for the purpose of sending you our newsletter. We do not share your personal data with anyone else and you have the right to withdraw your consent at any time. Just click the “unsubscribe” link included at the very bottom of each newsletter, or contact us at privacyoffice@berkeley.edu.
To manage our contacts and distribute our newsletter, we use EveryAction. This service is compliant with the European data protection regulations. For more information on EveryAction’s privacy policy, please visit the EveryAction website.
AirTable
We collect Forum membership applications using Airtable. Privacy and security have always been core to Airtable's approach to product development and customer service, and they continuously evaluate all of our practices to ensure your information is kept safe and secure. In that vein, they comply with Europe’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and help Airtable customers do the same. We do not share your personal data with anyone else and you have the right to withdraw your consent and data at any time. Please email evan.yoshimoto@berkeley.edu if you would like withdraw your consent and/or data from our AirTable database.
