Les gouters historiques de Chalais (The Historical Gatherings of Chalais) A Community Supported by the Network Catalyzers Program 2025
This project, led by Forum member Alexandra Georges-Picot in partnership with Xavier Arrateig, co-founder of community café La Guinguette du Touroulet and local non-profit Le Cocon des Canailles, seeks to bridge divides in the rural, post-industrial Northern Dordogne. It addresses the growing rift between long-established residents, many of whom feel alienated by the influx of neo-rural settlers with progressive values, and these newcomers, who often feel disconnected from the local heritage.
The initiative centers on a monthly afternoon tea at the community café, bringing together elders and younger generations to share life histories, memories, and knowledge of the land. By focusing on shared experiences—such as preserving schools, local businesses, and access to services—the project aims to build understanding and empathy, transcending political and cultural divides.
In towns like Chalais and Saint-Jory-de-Chalais, where far-right support has surged and social cohesion is strained, these gatherings provide a neutral, inclusive space for dialogue. With 40% of recent votes going to the Rassemblement National, tensions between long-standing residents and progressive newcomers risk deepening.
The desired outcome is to foster connections rooted in shared priorities and lived experiences, helping residents from all backgrounds feel heard, valued, and part of a common story. By bridging generational and cultural divides, the project aspires to create a more cohesive and resilient community.
